Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have seized smuggled goods worth around Tk 17.75 crore and arrested 201 persons involved in smuggling along border areas of Jashore’s Benapole over the last year.
Lt Col Selim Reza, commander of Jashore-49 BGB Battalion, revealed this during a press briefing on Sunday.
The seized items include 13 pistols, 24 magazines, 58 rounds of bullets, 26 kilogrammes of gold bars, 20,827 bottles of Indian phensidyl, 547 kg of marijuana, 406 bottles of alcohol, 567 pieces of yaba, and 40 grams of heroin. The value of the seized items is Tk 17,75,40,500, the BGB official said.
A total of 201 persons involved in different smuggling activities were apprehended in the last one year, Lt Col Selim Reza said.
Some drugs and arms traders have long been smuggling in narcotics and arms from India and selling those in different parts of the country, he said.
At the same time, some are involved in currency and gold smuggling.
Vigilance has been stepped up along the border areas to curb all these criminal activities, the official also said.
Some influential people are behind the smuggling activities along the border but they are yet to be brought to book due to lack of evidence against them, the BGB commander added.
