Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been put on alert along the Tumru, Ghumdhum, Chakdhala and Ashartali borders in Naikhyangchari in Bandarban following the military coup in Myanmar.
Cox’s Bazar 34 BGB Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed confirmed the matter to media on Monday evening.
According to sources, panic spread among locals living in the border areas of Bangladesh-Myanmar in Naikhyangchari upazila as news started to come in about the Myanmar army seizing power and placing under detention several top Myanmar leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi and the country’s president.
Many have expressed deep concerns over the deteriorating situation in the neighbouring country.
Responding to fears generated by the coup in Myanmar later in the day, BGB strengthened security measures in the aforementioned border areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
“This is an internal matter of Myanmar. Our border situation is normal. Yet we remain vigilant as an incident [the military coup in Myanmar] took place there,” the BGB official told this correspondent.
