The deceased was identified as Lance Nayak Rafiq, 35, of Kolaroa Kakdanga BOP and hailing from Kishoreganj district. The smugglers hanged a piece of looped rope under
the river water to transport smuggled goods through Bangladesh-India border, said Lt Col Mohiuddin Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB-33 battalion. Lance Nayak Rafiq spotted the rope while chasing a gang of smugglers around 9:30 pm to recovered some smuggled goods, said the commanding officer quoting locals.
When Rafiq was pulling the rope, the smugglers from the Indian side were also pulling the rope. At one stage, Rafiq got tangled in the rope and drowned in the river water, he added.
