Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Friday expressed grave concern over the killing of Bangladeshis nationals by BSF in the bordering areas and the presence of few Bangladeshi armed miscreants camps of regional parties of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) inside the Indian state of Mizoram.
BGB Director General Major General Md Shafeenul Islam expressed the concern during the fourth day of the 51st BGB-BSF Coordination Conference on Friday at Guwahati in the Indian state of Assam, according to a press release sent by the BGB Headquarters in Dhaka.
During the talks, the BGB DG requested his counterpart BSF DG Rakesh Asthana to destroy the hideouts of different CHT terrorist groups in Mizoram.
In response, the BSF DG, citing about the “zero tolerance policy” of the Indian government against terrorism, assured the BGB DG of taking “appropriate measures” against the terrorist hideouts.
BGB Director General Major General Md Shafeenul Islam also expressed his grave concern over the killings, injuring and beating up of unarmed Bangladeshi civilians by BSF and Indian nationals in the bordering areas.
“People of Bangladesh always appreciate the existing excellent relationship between the two border guarding forces and expect that BGB and BSF will take necessary measures to bring down the death cases to zero,” he said.
Both the BGB and BSF agreed to conduct joint night patrols in vulnerable areas along the border “as a more effective initiative to reduce border killings to zero”.
The border conference began on December 22 last and will conclude on Saturday. An 11-member team comprising the officials of the Prime Minister’s Office, Home Ministry, and Foreign Ministry led by BGB DG Major General Md Shafeenul Islam took part in the conference.
On the other hand, a 12-member delegation including the officials from the Indian Home and External Affairs ministries led by BSF DG Major General Rakesh Asthana joined the five-day conference.
India Today adds: Director-General of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) Shafeenul Islam said on Friday there is no report of any infiltration to India from Bangladesh. While addressing a joint press conference with Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) Rakesh Asthana in Guwahati, the DG of BGB said there is a perception that a large scale of Bangladeshi people has infiltrated India, but it is not true.
“The GDP growth rate of Bangladesh is now in uprising trend and the per capita income is now close to 2300 US dollars. So, there is no reason really for the Bangladeshis to cross the border to seek jobs or any other reasons. People of Bangladesh come to India with valid documents for treatment or other purposes.
But for work, there is no such cases,” Shafeenul Islam said.
He further said about 25 fishermen from Bangladesh recently came to Assam with passports, valid visas, but while going back to Bangladesh, they were apprehended at the border.
“Why this happened when they had valid documents. There is no infiltration from Bangladesh to India,” Shafeenul Islam said.
The Director-General of BGB also said anybody crossing the border without proper valid documents, “that is illegal crossing and both the border guarding forces of Bangladesh and India are vigilant and apprehended such individuals”.
Talking about the NRC, Shafeenul Islam said it is an Indian issue. “That doesn’t concern us,” he said.
“We are mostly responsible to guard our borders to prevent any kind of illegal activities,” Shafeenul Islam said.
However, the Director-General of BSF, Rakesh Asthana said the security force has apprehended 3204 persons this year who were illegally entering India.
“Out of which whose nationality is established, we sent back to Bangladesh and some of them are criminals also and appropriate legal actions have been taken against them,” Rakesh Asthana said.
He also said that both BSF and BGB are committed to stop the infiltration or exfiltration from their respective countries. “We are continuously apprehending the people who are illegally crossing the borders,” Rakesh Asthana said.
Talking about Rohingyas infiltration into India, Rakesh Asthana said the BSF is conscious of the problem. “We are alert on this issue and we keep on apprehending the illegal entrance in our country through that border,” Rakesh Asthana said.
Meanwhile, both BSF and BGB have decided to intensify joint night vigil at vulnerable areas to prevent smuggling and other criminal activities in the five-day-long 51st Director General (DG) level border coordination conference between BSF and BGB in Guwahati which started on December 22.
Various issues like cattle-narcotics smuggling, border patrolling, killings on the border and confidence-building measures were discussed in the border coordination conference.
