Sagar Biswas :The government on Saturday deployed paramilitary force Border Guard Bangladesh [BGB] in the city’s diplomatic enclave Gulshan and Baridhara with a view to ensuring additional security to diplomats and foreign nationals. The BGB members were deployed just a day after the British High Commission issued travel alert for the second time on Friday apprehending further and ‘indiscriminate attack’ on the foreign nationals residing in Bangladesh.Confirming the matter, Director General of BGB Major General Aziz Ahmed last night said: “The members of BGB have been deployed to cooperate the regular law enforcement agencies. Two platoons of BGB have started patrolling diplomatic zone from Saturday evening.”About the staying of BGB, the DG said, “The BGB will stay in the diplomatic area so long it is needed. BGB usually works in security related issue of the state.” Earlier in the afternoon, the members of different law enforcement agencies, including SWAT [Strategic Weapons And Tactics], Detective and Criminals Intelligence Division and Armed Police Battalion [APBn], patrolled the roads of Gulshan, Baridhara and some parts of Uttara during a full dress rehearsal for ensuring foolproof security to foreign nationals and diplomats. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police [DMP] arranged the rehearsal where over 100 law enforcers equipped with bulletproof jackets and sophisticated weapons took part. The law enforcers riding on motorcycle started patrolling in front of Police Plaza at Gulshan.”The rehearsal was arranged to convince everybody about the security arrangement. We don’t see any possibility of attack although British government has expressed their anxiety. There is no need to worry about security,” Additional Commissioner of DMP Sheikh Maruf Hasan said. The UK on Friday feared fresh attacks on Westerners in Bangladesh and those can be ‘indiscriminate’. “There is a high threat from terrorism. Further attacks targeting Westerners may occur.”Meanwhile, the police yet could not make any satisfactory development about the killing of two foreign nationals-Caesar Tavella of Italy and Hoshio Kunio of Japan, though several days have gone in the meantime. When asked, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque yesterday openly admitted about the shortcomings of security forces about resisting of such type of killings. “It’s not possible to resist target killing. Two foreign nations were killed, and both were target killings.””There is no lack of efficiency of intelligence agencies for foreigners’ killing. The skilled officers are now investigating the incidents of murder. The police have become more alert after the incidents. Hope, we will get a good result soon,” the IGP said. The high ups of government also think that the killings of foreigners are ‘well planned”. “The murders of foreign nationals have been committed in a well planned manner. However, we don’t think these types of incidents will hamper progress of the country,” said Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday.Echoing the same, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said: “The killing of foreign nationals is the second edition of politics of BNP. They are killing foreign nations not getting support from international quarter.”
