Leaders of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists [BFUJ] on Saturday demanded immediate formation of a broadcast policy by an independent commission.Besides, the BFUJ also expressed concerns over a number of sections in the National Broadcast Policy-2014.In this backdrop, the journalist leaders urged the government not to implement the broadcast policy before formation of the commission. They were demanding framing of a broadcast policy by the independent commission at a press conference held at the National Press Club in the city.BFUJ President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul read out a written speech at the press conference.”BFUJ does not see the current broadcast policy as a complete one. We think, it is a guideline for a complete policy. We urge the government for forming an independent commission that will form a full-fledged policy in consultation with the stakeholders,” Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul said.He said: “We are not rejecting the broadcast policy as it has many positive aspects. We hope the Information Ministry would take initiatives to correct the issues over which the BFUJ. has concerns. We want a fair broadcast policy.” ” BFUJ believes journalism of provocation is not journalism,” he said.Expressing severe anxiety, he said, “There is a provision in the broadcast policy that every media house would have to make editorial policy in line with the policy. This directive is dangerous and unacceptable. Because, editorial policy of a mass media can never be made at the directive of the government.” Opposing dissemination of confusing and untrue information in any television talk show, he said, “There are scopes to correct those, if such things take place. In case, the correction is not done, actions could be taken as per the existing laws. So, there is no need to keep it in the policy.”The BFUJ leaders also said the National Broadcast Policy-2014 is the fruit of the demand of the journalists. It is the professional journalists who raised the demand for a broadcast policy and they seen the government move a positive. They said the big concern of the BFUJ is that the new policy empowers the Information Ministry to take all decisions regarding broadcasting until the enactment of Broadcast Commission Laws and Rules. It will give wrong signal to all concerned at home and abroad, they further said.BFUJ Secretary General Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan also spoke on the occasion while Vice-President Dr. Utpal Sarkar, Treasurer Khairuzzaman Kamal, Joint Secretary General Saiful Islam Talukder and Executive Members Madhusudan Mandal, Rafiqul Islam Sabuj and Kazi Rafiq were present.Meanwhile, another faction of BFUJ [pro-BNP] leaders have already expressed deep concern and resentment over the draft National Broadcasting Policy. They also called for a demonstration for August 12 in protest against the approval of the policy. In a joint statement, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists [BFUJ] president Shawkat Mahmud and secretary general MA Aziz and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president Abdul Hye Sikder and general secretary Jahangir Alam Prodhan on Monday expressed their concern over the draft National Broadcasting Policy. Earlier on August 4, the Cabinet approved a draft of National Broadcast Policy-2014 with a provision to ban broadcasting anything that demeans the armed forces or law enforcement agencies.Once the draft is approved in the parliament, no media house will be allowed to broadcast any false information in talk shows. As per the draft, the government will form an independent commission, which will monitor the media reports and recommend applicants for broadcast licences. The commission will monitor TV and radio programmes to ensure accountability and protect public interests. It will also prepare and enforce a guideline for broadcasters.
