Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) on Saturday expressed resentment over the killing of journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul at Shahjadpur in Sirajganj.
In a joint statement, leaders of BFUJ and DUJ condemned the killing of the daily Samokal correspondent and demanded highest punishment of the killers.
At the same time, they denounced attacks and repression on journalists by police.
BFUJ President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, General Secretary Omar Faruq, DUJ Acting President Atiqur Rahman Chowdhury and General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury said in the statement that killing of a journalist while discharging professional duties cannot be desirable in a civilized society.
This type of killing because of conflicts of local leadership will detract the people from politics, they observed. The journalist leaders demanded the highest punishment of the killers of Shimul immediately and urged the Samokal authorities to give necessary assistance to Shimul’s family.
Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) also demanded quick legal actions against the killers of Abdul Hakim Shimul.
BPC expressed profound shock over the brutal killing of the Samokal journalist and condemned the killing.
It conveyed sympathy to members of the bereaved family.
