The total fish production of the country in 2017-18 fiscal year is 4.277 million metric tons, which is about 3.61 percent of the country’s GDP. About 60 percent of animal protein is consumed by these fisheries sector. Though constantly reducing the wetlands, Bangladesh becomes self-sufficient in fish production today with meeting up the needs of the growing population.
Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) was established in 1984 under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to conduct research and co-ordination of the country’s fisheries sector. Headquarter of this Institute established at Mymensingh with 5 centers and 5 sub-centers for conducting research according to the nature of environment and fisheries across the country. About a total of 646 scientists, officers and employees are working in this institute.
Researching more efficient and economical ways to produce, management, processes and marketing the fishery products as safe food with the addition in coordinating research on fisheries of the country are the main task of BFRI. Besides, coordination with local and foreign Universities and research institutes, they also conduct various meetings, trainings and workshops on fisheries also maintaining this institute.
Significant contribution
Of the 264 species of freshwater fish, 64 are currently on the verge of extinction. BFRI rescues 20 species of extinct fish from extinction by inventing fish breeding and cultivation techniques. So far, the institute has developed 61 fisheries and management technologies. BFRI has also identified 6th sanctuary in Barisal district to increase the production of Hilsa fish.
About 60-70% of the Vietnamese koi faced epidemics in 2014 through the country. By three years of research, BFRI developed a vaccine to prevent this epidemic disease. Medicinal uses of herbal Kalojira have been invented to cure fish rot diseases of the fish also developed by this institute. They developed Hybrid Kuchia fry for the production and cultivation management system in demand of international market. BFRI Mechanical Fish Dryer has developed an affordable and long-term use to create healthy and safe dry fish. They also developed 5 apps to easily reach the technology developed by the institute to the cultivators.
Director General of BFRI Dr Yahia Mahmud said, expansion of field level technology of fisheries department and various agencies create the production of fish is 4.277 Million metric tons at present. The country is now self-sufficient in fish. We are the 1st in Hilsa production, 4th in Tilapia production in the world. In order to achieve the government’s vision 2021 and 2041, BFRI has been researching more diligently to develop more sustainable technologies.
