BFIU reports 1,024 money laundering case in 5 yrs

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit has found evidence of as many as 1,024 cases of money laundering in the last five fiscal years to FY2019-20.
Half of the cases that involved huge money took place for siphoning fund from home to abroad.
Money laundering also took place in the country, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) found while looking into laundering cases for targeting foreign safe havens.
The picture of siphoning of tainted money has been revealed in a recently published report of the Unit.
The BFIU is responsible for investigating cases related to money laundering and financing terrorism both at home and abroad. The report provided details of money laundering incidents, as well as all their evidence.
Banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, money exchangers regularly report information to the BFIU on suspicious transactions made through them, helping the agency unearthing financial irregularities.
According to the latest BFIU report, 58 money laundering reports were finalised in FY2015-16, 121 in FY2016-17, 677 in FY2017-18, 52 in FY2018-19 and 116 in FY2019-20.
Besides, the organisation also collected information on 2,290 incidents and informed agencies concerned as per the demands of several government agencies.
“We send our reports to various government agencies. They then take actions on the incidents after investigating further,” said BFIU chief Abu Hena Mohd Razee Hassan.
“A good number of such cases are currently on trial and no one can be punished before the court’s verdict,” he said.
