Beximco Dhaka confirmed their play-off berth as they beat Gemcon Khulna by 20 runs in their crucial match of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup Cricket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Thursday.
Beximco Dhaka and Gemcon Khulna reached the play-off berth earning eight points each from their respective seven and eight matches.
Electing to bat first, Beximco Dhaka piled up a fighting total of 179 for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs and then bowled out Gemcon Khulna for 159 off 19.3 overs.
Beximco Dhaka made a good start as openers Mohammad Naim and Sabbir Rahman put on together 41 runs in the opening stand before Naim was caught by Mahmudullah Riyad off Shohidul Islam.
Sabbir Rahman struck a superb 56. His 38-ball innings was belted with three sixes and five fours. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his outstanding batting performance.
Naim hit a quick-fire 36. His 17-ball knock was ornamented with five sixes.
After Naim’s dismissal, Sabbir Rahman and Al-Amin Hossain contributed together 64 runs for the second wicket partnership before Al-Amin Hossain was caught by Shamim Hossain off Nazmul Islam when Dhaka’s score was 105 for the loss of two wickets.
Al-Amin Hossain knocked a remarkable 36. His 25-ball innings saw four fours and a sixer.
Later, Sabbir Rahman and Akbar Ali made a notable partnership. They put up together 42 runs in the fifth wicket stand before Akbar Ali was caught by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza off Hasan Mahmud when Dhaka’s total was 158 for the loss of five wickets.
Akbar Ali cracked 31 from 14 deliveries including four sixes and a four.
Shohidul Islam bagged two wickets at the cost of 31 runs, while Hasan Mahmud, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Nazmul Islam took one wicket each for 23, 26 and 51 runs respectively.
Promising spinner Robiul Islam of Beximco Dhaka played the key role in wrecking Gemcon Klulna’s innings. Robiul Islam claimed five wickets instead of 27 runs.
Gemcon Khulna had an unhappy start as they lost their early two wickets for 30 runs.
Opener Jahurul Islam and Mahmudullah Riyad repaired the damage adding together 48 runs in the third wicket stand before Mahmudullah Riyad was caught by Sabbir Rahman off Muktar Ali when Khulan’s score was 78 for the loss of three wickets.
After Riyad’s dismissal, Khulna failed to make any notable partnership. Thus they conceded defeat to their opponents.
Jahurul Islam hit a marvelous 53. His 36-ball innings saw two fours and four sixes.
Shamim Hossain and Mahmudullah Riyad added 24 and 23 runs respectively to the Khulna’s total.
Rubel Hossain and Muktar Ali of Beximco Dhaka bagged two wickets each for 30 and 35 runs respectively.
Nasum Ahmed took one wicket for 28 runs.
