Top seed Matteo Berrettini progressed to the Rio Open quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro on Friday. The 25-year-old Italian served 14 aces and won 79% of his first serves to close the rain-delayed match in two hours and 51 minutes at the Jockey Club Brasileiro. His next opponent will be Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-4, 7-6 earlier in the day.
“I had two match points in the second set but Thiago was strong and fought back,” Berrettini said. “The match didn’t finish until almost midnight. You have to be strong mentally.”
