Business Desk :
The technical evaluation committee (TEC) of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Wednesday recommended a 20 per cent increase in gas prices for Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company.
TEC proposed increasing household gas prices for a double-burner stove from Tk 975 to Tk 1,080 and for a single-burner one from Tk 925 to Tk 975.
As per Titas website, the company supplies gas to Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Narshingdi, Tangail, Manikganj, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Jamalpur, and Munshiganj.
On the other hand, energy experts and public representatives demanded that gas prices not be increased for Titas, because the company is profitable now. They also demanded the cancellation of the company’s margin.
The proposal came on the third day of the four-day public hearing on the proposed gas tariff hike of 117 per cent at the retail level with the representatives of the gas companies on Wednesday.
BERC is holding the hearing to listen to the arguments from the stakeholders in the gas sector.
All the sessions of the hearing – from 10:00am to 5:00pm every day till Thursday – will be held at the BIAM Auditorium in Dhaka.
Hearing on the proposals made by state-owned Titas gas was held on Wednesday.
Titas Gas company proposed increasing gas prices at every consumer level 117 per cent back in January. According to their previous proposal, gas prices will increase from Tk 925 to Tk 2,000 for a single-burner stove and from Tk 975 to Tk 2,100 for a double-burner one.
