Konstantinos Mitroglou scored a hat-trick by and strike partner Jonas added a double as Benfica provisionally rose to the top of the standings after beating Belenenses 5-0 in the Portuguese league on Friday.
Luis Afonso provided the assist that allowed Greece forward Mitroglou to open the scoring in the 41st minute.
Benfica attacked hard after the interval and Jonas scored in the 53rd. Afonso was again the provider for Mitroglou, delivering a precise pass for Mitroglou to net his second in the 58th. Midfielder Nicolas Gaitan picked out Mitroglou for his third in the 76th before Jonas completed the rout in the 88th following Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez’s cross.
The win stretches Benfica’s unbeaten streak to 14 games in all competitions.
