Our Correspondent Benapole :
Benapole, the country’s largest land port, is now under threat. The free movement of unauthorized people in the port has threatened the security system of the port.
At present, one outsider named Tendul has been illegally recruited in each shed of the port for long time.
Those who are directly involved with revenue evasion and steal goods from sheds of the port. Complaing are given but action in not taken properly.
There are a total of 42 sheds in the port. Tandels (outsider) was illegally appointed in each shed of the port.
20 lakh metric tons of goods are imported from India through Benapole port every year.
From which the government collects revenue of around Tk 6,000 crore.
Port authorities also receive separate revenues. But these imported products are not safe inside the port. Goods are constantly being stolen from the port. A fire is happening always. According to Benapole Custom House sources, in the fiscal year 2019-20, 18 lakh 6 thousand 728 metric tons of various goods were imported through Beanpole port.
In the financial year 2018-19, 18 lakh 36 thousand 953 metric tons of goods were imported from India .
In the first five months of the current fiscal year 2020-21, the level of revenue was Tk 2,506.06 crore. But one thousand 509 crore 69 lakh taka has been collected. The revenue deficit has been 999 crore 9 lakh taka for this reason. Even though the security personnel are on duty at every gate of the port, outsiders are entering freely.
Despite allegations that illegal people are entering the port despite the port being a bonded KPI area, the port authorities are not listening. The port users’ organizations met at a high-level advisory committee meeting held at Benapole Customs House on December 17. Complains are given about the free movement of illegal people in the port.
But the port authorities have not been able to remove these illegal people from the shed till date.
As a result, there is intense resentment among importers and port users who are thinking of launching a major strike at any time.
