Benapole, Bangladesh’s most important land port, has gone on Eid vacation even before the holidays have begun.
People aware of the land port’s operations feared long queues of goods-laden trucks on both sides of the port as workers get ready to go off on Shab-e-Qadr and Eid vacations from Wednesday.
Benapole port officials, and customs and C&F agents said the port began to grow desolate from Tuesday afternoon.
Assistant Commissioner at the customs building, Rezaul Karim, said the vacation could last until July 20 depending upon the sighting of the moon.
Benapole Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agent Association’s Senior Vice-President Nuruzzaman said there would be no work on Thursday, though the office would remain open.
“No goods will be released during this time, as the government has decided not to operate any truck or covered van three days before and after Eid.”
The long vacation would lengthen the queues of trucks on both sides of the port, the people concerned said.
Petrapole Port C&F Staff Welfare Association’s Secretary Kartik Chakraborty said trucks also queued up in India’s Petrapole port.
“Several hundreds of trucks were waiting at different places including the port’s truck terminal, Petrapole parking and Bangaon terminal,” he said.
“These trucks will go to Benapole port after the long vacation. This will create severe congestion at both the ports.”
Bepapole port Deputy Director (Traffic) Abdul Jalil said the hub would remain open on Thursday and anyone could come and receive their supplies.
He, however, said imports and exports would remain suspended during the vacation but the Indian trucks that came to Benapole to unload goods could return.
