The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has set a revenue target of Tk 6,245 crore for the current fiscal year 2021-22 at Benapole Customs House. Dr. Neyamul Islam Additional Commissioner of Benapole Customs House confirmed the amount of revenue on Sunday.
In the fiscal year 2020-21, the revenue target was Tk 6,244.62 crore but 4 thousand 143 crore has been collected at the end of the financial year. However, compared to the last few financial years, the growth rate of revenue collection in the financial year 20-21 is 57%.
In the fiscal year 2019-20, there was a deficit of Tk 3,392 crore against the target of revenue with deficit of Tk. 1145 crore in 2018-19 financial year. In 2017-18, the deficit was 179 crore 64 lakh taka. In 2016-17, more than 45 crore 40 lakh taka was excess collected against the target. In the 2015-16 financial year, the deficit was Tk 203 crore.
According to the traders, it is not possible to collect such a large amount due to the Corona pandemic in the current financial year. However, in order to increase revenue, it is necessary to develop the port infrastructure. Otherwise, it will never be possible to collect such a large amount of revenue.
Emdadul Haque Lota, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Association, said: It will be difficult to collect such a large amount of revenue in the current financial year
because of corona situation and on the other hand there is a lack of infrastructure development in the port for smooth trade.
Indian traders have also stopped import-export trade through various programs on mismanagement of Benapole port.
However, the customs authorities believe that if the port is developed, it is possible to get double the revenue.
Benapole Customs House Additional Commissioner Neyamul Islam said, Trade is not expanding as there are not enough facilities in the port for import trade. Although the target has not been met due to the Corona pandemic, the revenue growth has increased to a record level over the last few financial years. There is a long standing crisis in the port for the entry of imported goods.
If all kinds of development is done as per the demand in the port, the revenue will increase.
