Begum Rokeya Day, a national programme to ensure rights of women, was observed by the District Administration and Department of Women Affairs of the district here on Friday.
Marking the day, a colourful procession was brought out in front of Deputy Commissioner’s Office which paraded different streets of the town.
Deputy Commissioner of Barguna Md Nuruzzaman addressed a discussion as the chief guest at Shilpakala Academy with District Mohila Awami League President Madhobi Debnath in the chair.
Additional Police Superintendent Tofael Ahmed, NGO activist Hosne Ara Hashi and women leader Hosne Ara Champa also spoke on the occasion as special guests.
Begum Rokeya, who was a fierce champion of gender equality, was born at Pairaband village under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district on December 9, 1880 and died on the same day in 1932 in Kolkata. The birth and death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya are being officially observed as Rokeya Day since 1994.
BSS from Faridpur adds: Begum Rokeya Day, a national programme to ensure rights of women as well as for the emancipation of women, was observed in the district town today in a befitting manner.
Marking the day, district administration and women affairs directorate jointly organized a colorful rally and discussion meeting.
The discussion meeting held at DC’s conference room was chaired by Women Affairs Officer Daulatana Khondoer where ADC Protap Chandra Biswas was the chief guest.
ADC Protap told the meeting that the present government has enacted several initiatives through legislation to ensure the rights of women in the society.
