The price of beef was fixed at Tk 475 per kg and that of mutton at Tk 725 for the holy month of Ramadan in Dhaka city.
The decision was taken at a meeting between Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon and Bangladesh Meat Traders’ Association at Nagar Bhaban in the city on Tuesday, said the DSCC mayor while talking to reporters after the meeting.
The price of buffalo meat was fixed at Tk 440 per kg while lamb at Tk 620 and foreign beef at Tk 440 per kg.
In 2016, the official price of local beef was Tk 420 a kg, buffalo meat at Tk 400 per kg, mutton at Tk 470 a kg, and goat meat Tk 570 a kg.
“The new price chart of meat would be effective in all the kitchen markets and departmental stores under DSCC. If any trader breaks the price chart, he will be prosecuted,” said mayor Sayeed Khokon.
He also said that the traders have been given direction to follow the price chart. A monitoring team led by an executive magistrate would be formed to watch markets.
In the face of demand of the meat traders, Sayeed Khokon said he would take initiative to set up a permanent cattle market in DSCC area.
But the people are in doubt about the implementation of fixing price of meat.
“Whenever the authorities fix prices of different kinds of meat, the traders ignore the chart and follow their own whims,” said Abul Hossain, owner of a Medicine Point in Gendaria area, in the city.
But Bangladesh Meat Traders’ Association Secretary General Robiul Alam assured that they will follow the chart properly. The traders agreed to paste the price chart in their shops. “The traders will follow the price chart from the day of the Ramazan to the 26th Ramazan,” Robiul said.
Earlier the meat traders increased beef and red meat price several times blaming extortions and collection of extra money as taxes by the lease holders at the Gabtoli cattle market.
