Beef price is increasing day by day in the city. The meat sellers are charging Tk 500 to Tk 550 for per Kg of beef, though the City Corporation fixed the rate at Tk 475 per kg during the Ramzan.
“We are disappointed at the hike of beef price. So we have changed our food habit by buying chicken,” said consumer Rafiqul Islam to this correspondent at Jurain kitchen market.
Beef sells at Tk 520 per kg at Jurain kitchen market, said meat trader Suman Mian.
When asked why, he said, “We cannot suffer loss.”
The beef has been selling at Tk 475 in different kitchen markets in the city. At Gandaria kitchen market, it is Tk 530 per kg and at Hatirpool Tk 500 to tk 520 per kg. The meat traders were selling beef at Tk 500 per kg at Karwan Bazar.
Ahsan Haidar, a consumer from Moghbazar said, the meat traders hike price after every strike. We have bought beef at Tk 475 during Ramzan, but now they are charging Tk 500 per Kg at Karwan Bazar and nearby other kitchen markets.
Abul Hashim from Hatirpool Bazar said, “We are to change our food habit to maintain budget. The traders hiked red meat price without any bar. But no one have been seen to control it.”
When contacted, Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka South City Corporation told The New Nation yesterday, “The DSCC has fixed the beef price at Tk 475 per kg only for Ramzan, to keep the price stable in the holy month. After the month, we have not initiated any price fixing for the item.”
He said, price of every commodity depends on some matters like demand and supply.
Mesbahul Islam, the Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation said, ” So far I have heard that the cow supply from India decreased in recent days. It may cause the price hike.”
He also said that DNCC will investigate if the enlisted meat traders are involved in the price hiking or not
He also said that the DNCC will sit with the officials of DSCC to fix red meat price.
Rabiul Alam, the General Secretary of Meat Traders Association, admitted the indiscipline in trading.
“Some influential persons grabbed our association’s office at Gabtoli. So, we are not able to run our organization properly,” he said.
He also said that the extra money charging by the lease holder of Gabtoli cattle market is the main reason of price hiking.
According to the traders, there is demand for 5000 cows and buffaloes and 1500 goats and sheeps per day.
