The southwestern part of the country i.e. Barishal Division is surrounded by canals and river. In the eighties, about 6,000 iron bridges were built for low-cost for public and light vehicles transportation. Most of the bridges have become dilapidated due to heavy vehicles movement and natural calamities.
Many people have crossed all these places with bamboo bridges. The government undertook the Iron Bridge Rehabilitation Project in the southern part of the country under LGED with a total of 1961 bridges including construction of 865 RCC girder and rehabilitation work of 1096 iron bridges on Union Village Road.
The project has been running since July 2018. Millions of people are already benefited from the construction and repair of several bridges from the project. Recently, a group of people is spreading confusion in the minds of a section of the people, that the government is wasting crores of taka by inviting tenders by showing the bamboo bridge as the iron bridge, which is not true at all. Md. Abdul Hai, Project Director of the project, said the project has been implemented in compliance with all government rules. If the project is implemented, about 2 crore people of Barishal region will be benefitted.
It is to be noted that in order to tarnish the reputation of a local government i.e. LGED, propaganda has been spread in various areas of the southern region, Patuakhali, Barguna, Amtali, by inviting tenders in absentia. LGED works in the public interest for the welfare of the people.
