We are stepping into a new era, an era of digitalization. But little do we know, in the disguise of this big revolution the basic values of humanity are going under in the name of Cyber Crime. With the gradual change in the generation and people’s lifestyle the threat of cyber attacks are gradually increasing. Internet now being the buzzword in every sector has made it more prone to crimes. Cyber crime is changing the scenarios of Internet that is beyond our imagination. Are we really safe online? It’s an emerging question to everyone.
“Bashori is a college going girl who lives in Dhaka. Because of her desire to share and connect, she put a picture of her own on one of the most popular social sites. Few weeks later she found out that her picture had been used in another account without her permission.”
This is one of the most relatable plots of today, but it is just a mere threat of online crime, which is identity theft. Cyber crime can be done in many ways such as the exposure of private contents without one’s consent, sending virus in the form of an email, stealing intellectual property, physically damaging the computer system and many more. When asked, who are the main victims?
Young generation is the instant answer that clicks in our mind. For them Internet is just a pleasure out of boredom. But do we know what is going on behind that black screen once we log out? Our increasing desire to gain visibility comes with the increasing menace of leaked details that we put on Internet. How one click on Internet can give us a terrible fate, is now the harsh reality. There has to be an elemental understanding that, when online, everyone is a target and none of us are too small or unimportant.
We are proceeding towards a digitalized Bangladesh, yet it is to our concern that we are still lacking behind to protect the cyber infrastructure and ensure digital security. It has also become a national threat.
In February 2016, the stealing of $101 million from the reserves of the Bangladesh Bank has raised questions and challenged the ability of existing mechanisms in preventing such incidents of cyber crime. It is high time we take a moment to consider your own safety seriously.
Cautiousness while trusting anyone with personal information can contribute to sustain cyber crimes, because a single careless thought of human mind on Internet can instantly turn into a nightmare. It is only through the combined effort and collaboration of both individuals and government that can eliminate the threats of online predators and build up a secured digital Bangladesh for its citizens.
