Bangladesh’s merchandise exports exceeded target by 14.47 percent in September this year driven by rise of industrial outputs and moderate increase in demands for apparel in the U.S markets.
The country fetched US$3145.58 million against the target of $2748.00 million for the month. The growth in export earnings is 54.64 per cent over the income of the corresponding month of last year, which was $2034.13 million.
During July-September period, the country’s export earnings stood at $9940.60 million. The earnings are 6.54 per cent higher than the targets of the first quarter of $9330.00 million. The growth was 14.75 per cent over the income of $8662.73 million of the first quarter last year, according to a data
released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) on Monday.
The export earnings in September shows a clean rise this year compared to previous September, which is normally known as lean season. In September 2016, the country had fetched $8078.82 million.
“This year, industrial outputs were greater thanks to improvement in compliance issues pending for long with the apparel sector. On the other hand, a moderate rise in the demand in the U.S markets is visible because of decline in non-employment rates there,” said Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, yesterday.
The apparel sector alone earns $8991.67 million out of total $9940.60 million in the first quarter of the current fiscal.
