BD`s progress in women empowerment lauded

Australian High Commissioner in Dhaka Julia Niblett lauded Bangladesh’s progress in female education, women empowerment, gender equity, maternal health, prevention of child mortality and other sectors.
The envoy made the appreciation when she called on Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday at her parliament office, said an official release.
Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in the development indexes of social, economic and other sectors, she said and added that Australian cooperation for Bangladesh’s development would continue in future.
Parliamentary activities in Bangladesh and Australia, role of the opposition in parliament, election procedure to the reserved seats for women, functions of MPs, orientation programmes for newly elected MPs and Bangladesh’s leadership in Commonwealth Parliamentary Union and Inter Parliamentary Union came up for discussion during the meeting.
The speaker referred to Bangladesh’s friendly relations with Australia and thanked the envoy for her country’s cooperation for the country’s development.
She highlighted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s programmes for development of female education, including stipend and distribution of free textbooks.
