Visiting Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Li Yong on Wednesday termed Bangladesh’s socio-economic progress ‘very encouraging’ and appreciated Bangladesh’s role in the UNIDO and its strong support to the organisation’s policies and strategies.
He said, the UNIDO will continue to provide required support to Bangladesh in the achievement of sustainable industrial development and inclusive growth.
The UNIDO DG came up with the remarks during his meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the Foreign Ministry. A former Chinese public servant, Li Yong will assume his 2nd term as UNIDO DG in November 2017, said the Foreign Ministry here.
The UNIDO DG also underscored the need for support to develop the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Bangladesh.
He expressed optimism that the cooperation between Bangladesh and UNIDO will grow further through effective partnership in the coming days.
The Foreign Minister welcomed the UNIDO Director General and his delegation to Bangladesh and congratulated him on being re-elected for the 2nd term.
He appreciated UNIDO’s role in the sustainable industrial development of its member states, particularly for the LDCs.
Mahmood Ali sought more UNIDO support for the enhancement of Bangladesh’s industrial productivity, with quality improvements to ensure export competitiveness in different sectors.
Referring to various incentives offered to the investors (both local and foreign) in the 100 Special Economic Zones and Industrial or Technology parks in the country, he stressed on greater engagement by UNIDO, particularly in finding the ‘right technology’ to achieve required level of sustainable industrial development in Bangladesh in line with Vision 2021.
The Foreign Minister also highlighted the progress and development that were taking place in Bangladesh’s socio-economic sectors under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Proposal for Bangladesh’s inclusion in the UNIDO’s Partnership Country Programme (PCP) from the Asia-Pacific region was also discussed at the meeting.
