The death toll from Covid -19 reached 2,928 in Bangladesh on Sunday amid a decline in fresh cases and sharp rise in fatalities in the last 24 hours.
In a press briefing in the afternoon, Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said 54 more people died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll in the country to 2,928.
Of the new deceased, 40 are men and 14 are women. Among the total dead, 2,306 or 78.76 percent are men and 622 or 21.24 percent are women.
She said 1,792 more patients recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 123,882.
The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 54.45 while the mortality rate is 1.31 percent.
Besides, Prof Nasima said 2,275 new coronavirus infections were registered across the country in the last 24 hours.
With the fresh ones, the total number of coronavirus cases now increased to 223,453 in the country.
Prof Nasima said 10,078 samples were tested in labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 1,111,558 samples have so far been tested in the country.
In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 22.57 percent while the infection rate is 20.10 percent against total tests carried out so far, she said. On Saturday, Bangladesh reported 38 deaths from coronavirus and 2,520 cases.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases have reached 16,202,385 around the world as of Sunday morning.
Besides, the virus has so far claimed the lives of 648,445 people globally, according to Worldometer.
Of the currently infected 5,640,708 patients, 5,574,505 are in mild condition while 66,203 are in serious or critical condition.
