Bangladesh’s agricultural produces like vegetables, spices and fruits have huge untapped potential and could potentially be exported to other countries, including India, as they expand operations, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Saturday said.
He said Bangladesh has a quite large market in India, especially in its North Eastern Region, for many of its products and produces.
The Industries Minister addressed a business event in a city hotel focusing on fruits, vegetables, cereals, fishery and processed food.
Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla, apex trade body FBCCI President M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, President, India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry Taskeen Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Amu said the recent mutual visit of the Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and India has opened up new windows and avenues of cooperation between the two friendly countries.
“We believe this Business Meet will widen up the opportunities to explore the countless possibilities of expanding bilateral trade, business and investment in the Food and Agricultural Sector between the two brotherly countries,” he said.
Indian High Commissioner Shringla said Bangladesh-India trade and commercial ties are on upward trajectory.
During the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India in April, 13 agreements worth an estimated US$ 10 billion of mainly Indian investments in Bangladesh in the power, energy, logistics, medical and education sectors were signed, he said.
“There’s great potential for creating cross-border value chains in different sectors,” said the High Commissioner.
Shringla said Bangladesh companies can also access the Indian market, the Northeastern markets in particular, by exporting finished products and by exploring opportunities for investment there.
India’s exports to Bangladesh increased from US$1 billion in 2001-02 to around US$ 6 billion in 2016-17 and according to rough estimates another US$ 3 billion worth of goods are being brought into Bangladesh informally, according to the Industries Ministry.
