Kamruzzaman Bablu :
Bangladesh can significantly enhance job opportunity in Singapore by improving skills of the workers, officials said.
The migration expenses to Singapore is increasing gradually and a Bangladeshi worker now needs to pay Tk seven to eight lakh to get a job in Singapore because of unfair practices in visa trading by unauthorised recruiting agencies or individuals.
And this trend of unfair Visa trading can be checked by implementing some special systems. If it is done, the migration expense to Singapore for unskilled workers may be reduced by about 50 percent, said Victor Lee, Managing Director of Virsagi Management(s) Pte Ltd, Singapore in an interview with this Correspondent when he visited Bangladesh..
Earlier, Victor Lee had a meeting with Nurul Islam BSc, Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas and received a set of proposals.
The proposal suggested the ways how to get rid of illegal business by visa traders, unauthorised agencies and brokers.
In the proposal, it has been said to develop a website under the supervision and control of the Government of Bangladesh where all workers who want to go to Singapore and the recruiting license holders may register the names of their clients. This site may have access to all companies related to manpower business in Singapore.
Under this system, fee applicable will be fixed by the government, and authorized agency of Bangladesh and employment agent of Singapore will complete the migration process. As a result, the migration expenses will be reduced by over 50 percent.
The main reason of decline in migration expenses under this process is that the unauthorized agency or individuals involved in visa trading will be removed.
In a press conference recently in the capital Dhaka, Victor Lee informed that he started his activities of recruiting Bangladeshi non-skilled workers to Singapore by training them since 1998 and so far recruited over 50,000 workers under several companies.
Expressing worries over charging high fee for recruitment, he said a worker needs to work hard for about three years to cover the expenses. If any worker returns before that time, then he or she will suffer huge losses due to excessive migration expenses.
Migration cost will be cut significantly if overseas job seekers could complete entire migration process through employment agent in Singapore and authorized recruiting agency of Bangladesh, he informed.
In Indonesia, Nepal and other overseas employee supplier countries, migration process and expenses are cheaper, he further said.
In Bangladesh, since many of the unauthorised recruiting agencies and individuals are involved with this visa trading process, migration expenses is increasing day by day. Such agencies or individuals are purchasing IPA or Visa from the employer organizations. As a result, the number of workers from is decreasing.
The number was about 3000 two year ago, coming down to 500 only.
In this respect, we may hope that the proposals if implemented properly, general workers can go to Singapore with reasonable expenses.
