UNB, Dhaka :
Visiting Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation Mogens Jensen on Wednesday said Bangladesh has come a long way since the Rana Plaza disaster, but there is still a way to go.
“The country, the international community and the RMG sector have set new standards and introduced new forms of cooperation, which have not previously been seen anywhere in the world,” he said mentioning that Bangladesh is already framing the future.
The Danish Minister made the remark ahead of a high-level conference on ‘RMG and Beyond’ which will be held in the city on Thursday.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will grace the occasion as the chief guest while Jensen will open it.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Labour and Employment Mohammad Mujibul Haque will grace the occasion as special guests.
More than 200 participants representing the Danish and Bangladeshi governments, businesses, NGO’s as well as labour and business organisations will take part in it.
The Embassy of Denmark and the Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation is hosting the event marking mark the second anniversary for the Rana Plaza disaster, and to launch a new strategic sector initiative.
The conference has a dual focus. Key learning from the last two years’ multi-stakeholder cooperation in the RMG sector will be shared.
The second part of the conference will focus on the future-on how these learning can be utilised by other industries in Bangladesh and in other areas of CSR.
A new strategic government-to-government sector initiative will be launched at the conference.
The Danish Ministry of Employment and the Danish Working Environment Authority will in the coming 3-5 years work together with the Bangladeshi Ministry of Labour and Employment and other stakeholders to improve the working environment in Bangladesh with a particular focus on occupational health and safety.
