The co-existence of different religions in Bangladesh has been referred in the CNN debate of the republican presidential candidate while countering Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim statements.
The presidential frontrunner Trump, who earlier demanded a ban on Muslims entering the US, said Wednesday that he thinks “Islam hates us”.
On Thursday, he stood by the statement on the same network, CNN, when asked if he meant all1.6 billion of the world’s Muslims. “I mean a lot of them. I mean a lot of them,” he responded.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio responded that while Trump’s sentiments represent what a lot of people think, “presidents can’t just say anything they want. It has consequences here and around the world”.
He pointed to two missionaries in Bangladesh who recently told him they rely on friendly Muslims who they may not convert to Christianity, but who protect them while they are there.
He said the couple were on furlough and “they tell me that today they have a very hostile environment to operate in because the news is coming out that in America, leading political figures are saying that America doesn’t like Muslims,” according to the CNN transcript.
