Bangladesh has formally urged Thailand to accord duty free access to export of jute products from Bangladesh with a view to reduce trade imbalance between the two countries.
State Minister for Jute and Textiles Mirza Azam made this call to Thai government during his bilateral meetings with Deputy Minister for Commerce Apiradi Tantraporn and Deputy Minister for Finance Wisudhi Srisuphan on Thursday in Bangkok.
Acting secretary for Ministry of Jute and Textiles Fariduddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Bangladesh envoy to Thailand Saida Muna Tasneem and Chairman of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) Major General Humayun Khaled, among others, were present.
On his two-day visit to Thailand from June 3, the State Minister highlighted the priority for the promotion of environment-friendly jute and jute products nationally and globally and encouraged Thai leaders to use jute sacks instead of poly bags for storage of rice and other crops.
Later, the State Minister attended a business network dinner organized by the President of Thai-Bangladesh Business Council in Bangkok participated by more than 30 different business and trade bodies leaders.
The State Minister also called upon Thai investors to buy public sector jute and textiles industry in Bangladesh and invest in modernizing jute mills for the production of 100 per cent export oriented consumer friendly modern jute products of international standards, said a press release received here today.
Earlier, Bangladesh Jute and Textiles products were showcased in the meeting in Bangkok.
The State Minister for Jute is leading a five-member delegation to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China to enhance opportunities for greater market access of Bangladeshi jute products in these countries.
The State Minister will return home by June 15.
