Staff Reporter :
Near one lakh undocumented Bangladeshi migrant workers are going to be regularised in Maldives.
The opportunity came following the requests of the Bangladesh High Commission in Maldives, said a notice issued by the High Commission on Saturday.
The Bangladesh High Commission called upon the Bangladeshi migrant workers to apply for visa or work permit on an urgent basis.
However, the undocumented migrants who will not collect the papers in this round will face exemplary punitive measure, it said.
The notice said, “The legalisation process for undocumented Bangladeshi migrants is open at present. Those who have no legal visa and work permit have to collect the visa and work permit to complete the process.”
Under this process, the workers have to apply to the Economic Development Ministry there with necessary papers.
The Bangladeshi migrants have been requested to contact the Economic Development Ministry by the phone number 1500 or send e-mail to [email protected].
They can also contact the Bangladesh High Commission at 3320859 or through the Viber App at 7616636.
Sources said, there is no official data of the undocumented Bangladeshi migrants in the Maldives but the High Commission said in 2019 that the number would be around 80,000.
In total, around 110,000 Bangladeshi migrants were in Maldives at that time and around 15,000 had returned home during the pandemic, it said.
