Bangladesh and India, two key countries of South Asia, are demonstrating fantastic growth trends as part of developing Asia despite global uncertainties and slowdown, said Professor Dr. Atiur Rahman, former Governor of Bangladesh Bank.
An international conference on ‘The 6th Asian Management Research and Case Conference 2017’ at a hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday. The programme is being organized by the Business Faculty of Dhaka University in collaboration with a few other well reputed Asian Universities.
In a keynote speech Dr. Atiur Rahman gave a perspective of the global growth scenario in post Brexit and US election global economic uncertainties at the programme. Despite the global slowdown the developing Asia including Bangladesh and India is poised to grow more than 7 percentage points mainly because of its focused attention on low-cost manufacturing and broad-based inclusive growth strategy.
Dr. Rahman further said despite sluggish growth in Europe Bangladesh picked up two-thirds of the low-end exports vacated by China. And this trend will continue for some years to come. Yet, Dr. Rahman suggested looking towards near neighbors in Asia for enhancing intra-regional trade like South Korea which pushes 60 percent of its total exports to Asia.
He further advised Bangladesh policy makers to remain focused on faster poverty reduction through improving value-added agricultural growth strategy yielding more employment, increased investment, export diversification, desired institutional reforms related to taxation, financial sector, cost of doing business, climate change and sustainable urbanization.
