Bangladesh will strongly raise her voice regarding Rohingya repatriation at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly so that Myanmar remains under global pressure to take back their citizens in Rakhine State, their homeland.
“Bangladesh’s strong voice and participation in the UNGA is extremely essential so that international pressure is put on Myanmar to expedite the repatriation process,” Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told a media briefing in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
Briefing about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s participation in the UNGA and high-level meetings on various issues, he said that the five-point and reiterated three-point proposals made by Prime Minister Hasina at the 72nd and 73rd UNGAs, are still relevant to find a solution to the Rohingya crisis. The Prime Minister might give new proposals to find the solution to Rohingya crisis, he said adding that those proposals would be submitted in a stronger way.
This year’s main theme of the general debate is, “Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion,” Momen said.
Bangladeshi delegates led by Sheikh Hasina will raise other issues like climate change, poverty eradication, quality education and women empowerment during the general debate, the minister said.
The premier is scheduled to leave Dhaka for New York on September 22 to participate in the general assembly, he said.
The meeting might take place on September 24 or 25, officials said.
The Foreign Minister also hinted of holding a meeting with China and Myanmar on the repatriation of Rohingyas on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Dr Momen said China is supporting Bangladesh’s proposals over Rohingya repatriation process and their efforts are visible now. “We’re hopeful of a peaceful solution.”
