Japan will provide a loan of Tk 12,819 crore, the largest-ever loan package since 1974, to Bangladesh for implementing six major projects here.
The both countries signed an agreement in this regard on Wednesday. Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh office Mikio Hateda and Additional Secretary of the Economic Relations Division Kazi Shofiqul Islam signed the loan agreement on the 37th Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan package of Japan to Bangladesh at the ERD in the city. State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan and Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Masato Watanabe were present on the occasion.
The six projects are Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project (Engineering Services), Cross-Border Road Network Improvement Project (II), Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (II), Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project (II), Energy Efficiency and Conservation Promotion Financing Project and Disaster Risk Management Enhancement Project. The interest rate for the loan is 0.01% while the repayment period is 40 years with a 10-year grace. The total project cost of Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project (Engineering Services) is Tk 11,156 crore.
Of the total, JICA will provide Tk 8,836 crore in ODA loan which is 79 percent of the total project cost. The objective of the project is to construct a dedicated railway bridge over the river Jamuna in parallel to the existing Bangabandhu Bridge.
The Cross-Border Road Network Improvement Project (II) project will cost Tk 2473 crore with Japan providing Tk 1851 crore in ODA loan. The aim of the project is to construct 17 bridges and 7 culverts on the Asian Highway Corridor to establish the continuous regional and sub-regional connectivity.
