BD to become self-sufficient in egg production in FY20

The country is going to be self-sufficient in egg production this financial year (FY20) with an expected output of 17.81 billion eggs, according to the government.
The egg sector’s turnover is likely to be more than Tk 124 billion during the period.
This was disclosed at the discussion meeting on the eve of the ‘World Egg Day 2019,’ held at the CIRDAP Auditorium in the city, organised jointly by the Department of Livestock, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council and World Poultry Science Association (Bangladesh).
While speaking as the chief guest, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru said the country was close to achieve self-sufficiency in egg production in the last fiscal when per head availability reached 103 eggs (17.11 billion).
“A person should consume at least 104 eggs annually,” he said, referring to FAO’s dietary guidelines.
“We are going to produce over 17.81 billion eggs this year, which means per head intake will be more than 107 eggs annually, he added.
Fazle Rahim Khan Shahriar, president of World’s Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch, quoting the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) said, the egg production in the country was 1099.52 crore in 2014-15 fiscal year but it is expected to reach at 1781 crore in the current fiscal year 2019-20.
Shahriar also said that the egg-centric trade was around 8338.68 crore in 2015-16 fiscal year and it is expected that by the end of 2019-20 the amount will be more than 12467 crore.
BPICC President Moshiur Rahman proposed to include egg as a topic in the primary school curriculum to help the students know more about egg nutrition.
He said that if we can ensure two eggs a week for working people including the garment workers it will be a great help for egg industry and will also help to increase their productivity and live a long life.
Livestock Secretary Md Raisul Alam Mondal said that more educated youths should come to poultry profession.
He said we have to use latest technology, improve farm management and biosecurity, train marginal farmers if we want to move ahead.
He said that from US president to everyone consume poultry eggs but in our country many people hesitate to consume poultry egg. He also said that the govt. is ready to give policy support for poultry export but we need compliant farms for that. He also informed that the government has approved a livestock development project of Tk.350 crore recently.
Director General of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) Dr Hiresh Ranjan Bhowmik said that if propagandas against eggs can be removed, percentage of egg intake will go up. He hoped that the egg production will increase and the rate of malnutrition will come down.
A colorful rally was brought out in the city to celebrate the Egg Day. World Egg Day is celebrated on the second Friday in October.
It was founded by the International Egg Commission (IEC) at a conference held in Vienna in 1996. The idea behind the day is to raise awareness of the egg’s nutritional value across the globe.
