Bangladesh posted a massive 163-run victory over Sri Lanka in the third match of the Tri-Nation ODI series at the flood-lit Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Friday.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh piled up a mammoth total of 320 for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs and then shot out Sri Lanka for 157 off 32.2 overs.
Bangladesh made a superb start as Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque, the two openers contributed 71 runs in the opening stand before Anamul (35) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella off Thisara Perera.
Then Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan put on together 99 runs for the second
wicket partnership before Tamim Iqbal was caught behind by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella off Akila Dananjaya when the hosts’ total was 170 for the loss of two wickets.
In-form Tamim Iqbal hit a marvellous 84. His 102-ball innings was studded with seven fours and two sixes. Tamim fulfilled his 40th ODI half century capitalizing 72 deliveries.
After Tamim’s departure, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim put on together 52 runs for the third wicket partnership before Shakib Al Hasan was caught and bowled by Asela Gunaratne when Bangladesh’s score was 227 for the loss of three wickets. Shakib Al Hasan made a terrific 67. His 63-ball knock was laced with seven fours. It was Shakib’s 36th ODI half century.
After Shakib’s dismissal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad added together 50 runs before Riyad (24) was caught by Thisara Perera off Nuwan Pradeep when the team’s total was 277 for the loss of four wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim made a wonderful 62. He hit four fours and a six in his 52-ball innings before he was cleanly bowled out by a yorker of Thisara Perera when Bangladesh’s score was 284 for the loss of five wickets. It was Mushfiq’s 28th ODI half century. After dismissal of Mushfiq, Bangladesh failed to make any notable partnership.
Sabbir Rahman remained unbeaten with 24. He hit three fours and a sixer in his 12-ball knock. Thisara Perera captured three wickets at the cost of 60 runs, while Nuwan Pradeep got two wickets conceding 66 runs.
Gunaratne and Dananjaya took one wicket apiece.
Later, Sri Lanka failed to resist the tight and controlled bowling attack of Bangladesh bowlers.
Shakib Al Hasan grabbed three wickets at the cost of 47 runs, while Rubel Hossain and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza bagged a pair of wickets each instead of 20 and 30 runs respectively. Mustafizur Rahman and Nasir Hossain took one wicket each for 20 runs each.
Sri Lanka had a poor start as opener Kusal Perera was cleanly bowled out by Nasir Hossain for just one run. Then Upul Tharanga and Kusal Mendis built a notable partnership. They added together 41 runs in the second wicket stand before Tharanga (25) was caught at the mid-off by Mahmudullah off Mashrafe Bin Mortaza when Sri Lanka’s score was 43 for the loss of two wickets. One-down Kusal Mendis (19) was caught at the mid-off by Rubel Hossain off Mashrafe when Sri Lanka’s total was 62 for the loss of three wickets.
‘Wonder Boy’ Mustafizur Rahman cleanly bowled out Niroshan Dickwella when the islanders’ score was 85 for the loss of four wickets.
Third-down Dinesh Chandimal (28) was run out by a direct throw of Shakib Al Hasan when Sri Lanka’s total was 106 for the loss of five wickets.
Later, Shakib dismissed Gunaratne for 16, removed Wanidu Hasaranga for a duck and picked up the wicket of Thisara Perera for 29. Then Suranga Lakmal (1) was bowled out by Rubel Hossain when Sri Lanka’s total was 152 for the loss of nine wickets. Dananjaya (14), who was caught at the mid-off by Shakib Al Hasan off Rubel Hossain and Sri Lanka’s innings came to an end.
Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
