Spirited Bangladesh took the upper hand as they grabbed Caribbean’s five wickets for 75 runs in the first innings after the hosts piled up a mammoth total of 508 thanks to Mahmudullah who hit a century in the first innings on the second day of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.
Bangladesh have now 433-run lead.
Bangladesh resumed their first innings with the overnight score of 259 for the loss of five wickets. Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad resumed their first innings with the overnight score of 55 and 31 runs respectively.
Shakib and Riyad put on together more 42 runs in the six-wicket stand on the second day before Shakib was caught at the gully by Shai Hope of Kemar Roach when Bangladesh’s score was 301 for the loss of six wickets.
Riyad notched up a terrific 136. His 242-ball innings was belted with 10 fours. It was Riyad’s third Test century. Riyad reached his hundred-run landmark playing 203 balls hitting six fours.
Shakib Al Hasan hit a responsible 80. His 139-ball knock saw six fours. After Shakib’s dismissal, Riyad and Liton Das contributed together 92 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Liton Das was bowled out by Kraigg Brathwaite when the team’s total was 393 for the loss of seven wickets.
Liton hit a sparkle 54. His 62-ball innings saw eight fours and one six. It was Liton’s 4th Test half century.
After Liton’s departure, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (18) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off Jomel Warrican when Bangladesh’s score was 416 for the loss of eight wickets.
Then Riyad and Taijul Islam put on together 56 runs in the ninth wicket stand before Taijul (26) was caught behind by Shane Dowrich off Brathwaite when the home side’s score was 472 for the loss of nine wickets.
Riyad and Naeem Hasan added together 36 runs in the last wicket partnership before Riyad was bowled out by Warrican when Bangladesh’s innings came to an end.
Brathwaite, Roach and Warrican got two wickets each conceding 57, 61, 91 runs respectively.
Later, Bangladesh spinners dominated over the Caribbean batsmen.
West Indies suffered an early jolt losing five wickets for just 29 runs.
Shakib dismissed opener Brathwaite for a duck.
Then Miraz bowled out Kieron Powell for 4.
Shakib struck again and dismissed Sunil Ambris for only seven runs and
Miraz removed Roston Chase for naught.
After Roston’s departure, Shai Hope (10) was bowled out by Miraz when the visitors’ total was 29.
Shimron Hotmyer and Dowrich were on 32 and 17 at the crease before the two umpires pocketed the bails for the second day.
Miraz grabbed three wickets at the cost of 36 runs, while Shakib bagged a pair of wickets instead of 15 runs.
