The foreign ministry has summoned the Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka in a fresh diplomatic row. It asked him to tell his government to immediately send back abducted border guard Nayek ‘Razzak’ who was abducted and another of his colleague ‘Biplob’ received bullet wounds on Wednesday.

“The Ambassador immediately called his foreign office,” said a source, privy to the matter, to bdnews24.com. “We hope Naypyidaw will take this seriously.” Summoning the Burmese envoy is not new for Dhaka as tension exists between the neighbours over border issues and the presence of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees in Bangladesh.
Burmese authorities have been denying Rohingya refugees citizenship. Myo Myint Than was summoned weeks back on June 5 over a Rakhine state minister’s comment at a Naypyidaw diplomatic briefing on Bangladeshis illegal migration issue.
But the foreign ministry did not make any official statement in that case or the latest one. Officials at the foreign ministry said they wanted to push forward their ambitious plan of boosting relations with Myanmar.
“We’ll condemn or protest whenever any situation arises. But our focus is to build trust with Myanmar,” a diplomat said, requesting anonymity.
Bangladesh has opted to work closely with Myanmar to solve the ‘boat people’ crisis, particularly after the influx of thousands of Burmese and Bangladeshis in the Indian Ocean by boat. Bangladesh also recently took back its nationals immediately after they were found on broad a ship in Myanmar waters.
Myanmar also serves as a gateway for Dhaka to build bridge with South East Asian grouping, ASEAN. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Teknaf-based BGB 42 Battalion Commander Lt Col Abu Zar Al Zahid earlier on Wednesday gave a slightly different version of the incident while talking to reporters over the Naf River shooting.
But both of them said “misunderstanding” led to the incident on the Naf River at Teknaf Upazila early on Wednesday. “Myanmar’s BGP opened fire due to a misunderstanding between the two border patrols on the Naf River,” the minister had said.
He said the two border forces patrolled the common river and the problem arose when the BGB trawler got stuck in a fishing net.
But the Teknaf BGB chief Lt Col Zahid had said the BGB patrol at the river’s Jamudira Point stopped a fishing trawler and conducted a search suspecting that it was smuggling Yaba.
“A Myanmar border guard patrol on the river fired at the BGB, leading to an exchange of fire between them.
“The unwanted shooting broke out as the Myanmar border forces mistook them to be human-traffickers or smugglers,” he told bdnews24.com. The injured BGB soldier ‘Biplob’ was taken to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital and later shifted to the Combined Military Hospital in Chittagong. The abducted soldier has been kept at a BGP camp near the Naf River in Myanmar. The state minister for home earlier hoped that he would be brought back “very soon through a flag meeting between the BGB and BGP”.
