BD, Singapore sign MoU for coal fired plant

Bangladesh and Singapore-based Sembcorp Utilities on Wednesday signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishing a coal fired power plant at Matarbari.
Abul Kashem, Managing Director of Coal Power Generation Company of Bangladesh Ltd, (CPGCLBL) and Tan Cheng Guan, Executive Director of Sembcorp Utilities, signed their respective companies.
The power plant having capacity of 1400MW electricity will be implemented in two phases. The project of Phase-I having capacity of 700 MW will come into generation in 2022. Ulta Supercritical Technology (UST) will be used in the power plant and it might be run by imported coal from Indonesia.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Secretary of the Ministry Monowar Islam, Additional Secretary Ahmed Kaikaus, Director General of Power Cell Muhammad Hosai, PDB Chairman Khandker Maksudul Hassan, REB Chairman Major General Moin Uddin and other officials were present of behalf of Bangladesh side.
On behalf of Sembcorp Utilities of Singapore President and CEO Tang Kin Fei, CEO (International) Chua Taik Him, Singapore’s Ambassador to Bangladesh of Senior Advisor Chan Heng Wing were present in the signing ceremony.
Bangladesh government will finance 50 percent cost of the project and Singapore will bear the rest. Equal rights shall be owned by the two countries.
