UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh has sought Japan’s continued support to achieve its development goals mentioning that Japan has been a ‘trusted and tested friend’ for Bangladesh’s socio-economic development.
“I’m confident as in the past, Japan will continue to be a trusted partner in our endeavour to realise or development goals,” Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali told a function in the city on Saturday afternoon.
Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Masato Watanabe hosted the reception at his residence on the occasion of the birthday of the Emperor of Japan.
Politicians, diplomats, business leaders, civil society members and journalists were present.
The Foreign Minister said Bangladesh government is also working to become a digital knowledge-based middle-income country by 2021 with a long-term aspiration to make Bangladesh a ‘developed country’ by 2041.
Terming Japan the single largest development partner of Bangladesh, the Foreign Minister said Bangladesh deeply appreciates Japan’s Official Development Assistance and for a further package of assistance to Bangladesh for ensuring continued economic development.
“I hope the Bay-of-Bengal Industrial Growth Belt (BiG-B) initiative will have a smooth rollout and contribute further towards economic benefits for both the countries,” he mentioned.
Japan was also one of the first countries from the developed world to recognise the newly independent Bangladesh in February 1972.
“From those early days of our reconstruction efforts to the present day- it has been a journey marked by mutual trust, interest and respect. The same spirit of cooperation and partnership also continues in our common quest to ensure regional and international peace, security and development,” Mahmood Ali said.
The Foreign Minister said Bangladesh-Japan relationship was elevated to a level of ‘Comprehensive Partnership’ during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Japan in May 2014.
