BD seeks global aid for tackling climate-related health risks

Bangladesh has sought cooperation of the international community for tackling non-communicable diseases as
well as health risks caused by climate change.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim made the call while addressing the UN General Assembly’s special session of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in New York in the United States on Monday, said an official release received here Tuesday.
The Minister said although Bangladesh has achieved some exemplary progress in the health sector, newer risks and challenges have been impeding the way ahead for the country.
“Bangladesh needs financial and technological assistances to scale up its capacity to tackle the increase of non-communicable diseases as well as the health risks arising from impacts of climate change, he said.
Regarding the country’s plan to tackle the population boom, the minister said child marriage is still one of the main obstacles for controlling population increase.
Recently, the government has taken steps to review the progresses already made in the sector and is likely to increase the punishment for child marriage, he added.
Representatives of 90 UN countries, including the head of governments of many countries, addressed the special session.
