Bangladesh has received two new most advanced corvette class warships from China to enhance the capability of its navy in securing the country’s maritime resources.
China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) delivered the two vessels to the Bangladesh Navy at a function in Qidong City, east China’s Jiangsu Province on Friday.
A naval team, led by Rear Admiral M Shahin Iqbal, received the ships – “Swadhinata” and “Prottoy” on behalf of Bangladesh.
Navy Chief Vice Admiral M Farid Habib attended the ceremony as the chief guest while high officials of China Navy and CSIC, among others, were also present.
The ships are expected to be anchored in Chittagong Port in January, officials said.
They said, the ships will be the most advanced frigate in the Bangladesh Navy, which will be a boost to its coastal defense capability.
Highlighting features of the warships, Zhu Xuejun, Chief Engineer of the CSIC, said, the vessels have comprehensive combat capacity and excellent maneuverability and are able to sail at a maximum speed of 25.5 knots on the high seas
and they have the anti-air missile systems. With a displacement of 1,300 tonnes, the 90-metre-long and 11-metre wide corvettes are of China’s most advanced export warship type.
A corvette can accommodate 80 crew members.
“This corvette is equipped with a ship-to-air missile weapons system which can coordinate with the search radar and tracking radar to conduct joint combat to multiple targets in air,” he added.
Zhu Xuejun mentioned that the two vessels will be the key warships of the Bangladesh Navy.
Bangladesh is a main buyer of China-made weapons. The country signed the purchase deal for the two warships in 2013.
