The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has recognised Bangladesh as the eighth top fish producing country in the world.
According to the publication, Bangladesh produces 4.1 million tons of fish while China tops the list with 62.2 million tons of fish. Indonesia, India, Vietnam, USA, Russia and Peru are next on the list.
According to government data, Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in fish production. The fisheries sector contributes 3.5 per cent to the national GDP of Bangladesh.
In the 2016-2017 fiscal, Bangladesh produced a total of 41,34,000 metric
tons of fish, including a first-time surplus of 84,000 tones. It helped the country to achieve the rank, he said.
In getting the third position, Bangladesh produced a total of 10,48,242 tones of fish from inland water bodies in 2016, about 2.4 percent higher than 2015, according to the FAO’s fisheries and aquaculture report.
China topped the list with 23,18,046 tones, while India was in second place with 14,62,063 tones, found the report which was made public on July 9. Myanmar and Cambodia secured fourth and fifth positions.
In overall aquaculture production, Bangladesh was placed fifth by producing 22 lakh tones in 2016, said the report. China topped that list with a production of 4.92 crore tones.
The report also said Bangladesh produced 1,13,200 tones of fish from marine and costal sources, and ranked 11th in the list.
