Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali has again urged the global community to keep ‘oceans and seas’ as a stand-alone post-2015 development goal.
He was speaking at a discussion on maritime policies and challenges in the context of sustainable development goals on the sidelines of the 60th anniversary of the Asian- African Conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Bangladesh has recently taken up blue economy as a foreign policy priority after settling maritime boundary disputes with neighbours India and Myanmar.
Ali suggested the charting of a roadmap to reap the benefits of the blue economy across the Asian and African oceanic belt.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs of Indonesia Indroyono Soesilo delivered the event’s keynote speech.
Mahmood Ali also called upon Asian and African countries to build “constructive partnership” to tackle “daunting” climatic challenges.
He identified certain challenges like an increase in rapid-onset climate events, shrinking livelihood options, and growing displacement facing countries of the Pacific and Indian Ocean archipelago.
He stressed constructive partnership across “research-observation-surveillance domain” to cope with the challenges.
He also emphasised the sharing of information and knowledge, and ensuring the full implementation of international law, as reflected in the UNCLOS along with all existing regional and international regimes.
He also underscored the need for “meaningful” international support in securing a balance in conservation, exploitation and utilisation of oceanic resources and for effective collaboration among the countries.
The foreign ministry said several ministers and vice-ministers from Asia and Africa attended the event.
