Russian envoy says: BD people to decide need for fresh polls

UNB, Dhaka :Russian Ambassador in Dhaka Alexander A Nikolaev on Tuesday said the people of Bangladesh and its major political stakeholders will decide the necessity of new elections saying Russiadoes not impose any model on any country.”Bangladeshi people and its main political stakeholders will decide to hold new elections in five days, five weeks or five years,” he said during his interactions with diplomatic correspondents at the Jatiya Press Club.Diplomatic CorrespondentsAssociation, Bangladesh (DCAB) arranged the event – Dcab Talks – with its President Mainul Alam in the chair. DCAB General Secretary Angur Nahar Monty was also present.Responding to a question on politics and new elections in Bangladesh, the Russian diplomat said he got ‘sick’ of such questions and mentioned that it is absolutely out of his concern.Explaining further that it is not his job to answer to such questions, a smiling Nikolaev said, “I’m Ambassador of Russia, not Africa.”He said, Russia does not favour imposing something on what will be election process in Bangladesh or other countries.Apparently explaining China, India and Russia’s support to present government after the January 5 elections, the Russian envoy said leaders in Beijing, New Delhi and Moscow have ‘enough political wise’ not to impose anything on any body in the world, in South Asia and Bangladesh in particular.He said, Russia congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the results of the January 5 elections as they believe in equal relations with everybody. “We’re for equal relations with everybody regardless of the size of the territory or population.”
