Bangladesh is not getting its due share of water from common rivers with India for the government’s failure. The government, which has failed to solve the Farakka problem, is now giving its support to the construction of Tipaimukh dam, Chairman of National Awami Party (NAP) Jebel Rahman Gani said at a roundtable on Friday.
NAP organised the programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity to mark the 39th anniversary of the historic Farakka Long March. Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani organized the long march to force India to give Bangladesh the water of Ganga on May 16, 1976.
India is continuing its water aggression and deprived Bangladesh of its share of water from the common rivers.
“India is able to withdraw water from the transboundary rivers due to the servitude attitude of the Awami League government. The relation between Bangladesh and India should develop on the basis of equal status of both countries. We would unilaterally
give everything to India and, in return, we would get nothing, it is not acceptable,” he said.
“The government fails to solve the water sharing issue with India, including the Farakka problem. Besides, it is providing support to India to build the Tipaimukh dam, which is detrimental to Bangladesh in every aspect,” he added.
Terming Moulana Bhasani as the pioneer of the politics of Bangladeshi nationalism, Gani said the Farakka Long March was the first protest against India’s water aggression. “Moulana Bhashani was always vocal for upholding the people’s right and the country’s sovereignty,” he said.
However, he thanked the government for realizing the passage of Land Boundary Agreement bill in the Indian parliament. “Though the Indian initiative came 41 years after the agreement was signed, we would hope the Indian government would be sincere to implement it,” he said, “We also have to see if India really wants to implement it or its is a stunt to secure Bangladesh’s vote in the Security Council of the United Nations,” he observed.
However, Gani was critical of the Indian authorities for indiscriminate killing of Bangladeshi people on the borders.
Convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan unit of NAP Syed Shahjahan Saju presided over the roundtable. Among others, Secretary General of NAP Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan, Acting Secretary General of Kalyan Party MM Aminur Rahman and Joint Secretary General of NAP Swapan Kumar Saha also spoke on the occasion.
