BD nominated Co-Chairperson of ‘Beijing Call for Action’

Bangladesh has been nominated as the co-chairperson of the ‘Coordinating Committee on the South-South Cooperation in Population and Development’ for implementing the ‘Beijing Call for Action’ on population and development in the South-South Cooperation countries.
The unanimous decision to nominate South Africa as the Chairperson and Bangladesh as the Co-Chairperson was taken at a meeting held at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) headquarters in New York on April 6.
Representatives of the South-South Cooperation countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, China, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and Tunisia, among others, were present at the meeting, according to a release received here on Friday from Bangladesh mission in the UN.
State Minster for Health and Family Affairs Zahid Maleque led the Bangladeshi delegation at the meeting.
Officials of the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations also attended the meeting. The Beijing Call for Action aims to accelerate and outline key actions to further promote South-South cooperation in the field of population and development, including population dynamics, sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, and gender equality for the next five years.
On March 18, 2016, Beijing Call for Action was adopted at the Ministerial Strategic Dialogue on South-South Cooperation for Population and Development jointly organized by National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China (NHFPC), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Partners in Population and Development (PPD) in Beijing, China.
At the meeting, the representatives of the member countries under the South-South Cooperation stressed on mutual cooperation and coordination for taking forward the population and development issues.
