A Bangladeshi man has been shot at in the leg by robbers in the Astoria neighbourhood of Queens, New York City, US media reports.
According to CBS New York, witnesses said a group of three suspects entered the Bonoful Grocery store on 36th Avenue at about 8:30 pm local time on Saturday and initially pretended to be police officers,.
“The first guy show badge. Metal badge – NYPD,” 18-year-old Hussain Jakaria told the New York Post.
“He said it’s illegal, your store is illegal.”
A video of the incident shows suspects showing off badges and a gun, according to CBS.
The suspects then hit one man and stole $2,000 from the cash register before running off.
Mohammed Ahmed, the 30-year-old brother-in-law of the grocery’s owner, then began to chase them.
Video from a nearby laundromat shows Ahmed chasing them across 36th Avenue before he was shot in the leg, CBS says.
Mohammed Ahmed’s relatives say, he was in intensive care at Elmhurst Hospital waiting for a surgery to remove the bullet.
Ahmed works as a waiter at a restaurant in Manhattan. He and his wife moved to the area seven months ago. He had been attempting to send money to his parents in Bangladesh when the grocery was held up.
Faruk Ahmed, the owner of the grocery, says the suspects are arrested very soon.
“We need justice,” he told CBS.
