Bangladesh and Myanmar border forces have pledged to work together to remove and disarm mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) near the shared border.
The agreement was announced by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Additional Director General Brig Gen Md Anisur Rahman on Thursday at a press conference after a five-day border conference between the two countries.
The two forces spoke of various measures to ensure a safe and peaceful border during the conference, he said.
“We agreed on various measures during the conference, including the removal of explosives and land mines planted near the border and the organisation of regular patrols.”
Bangladesh shares a 271 km border with Myanmar. About 150 km of this border area is composed of jungles, mountains and other remote areas. Many separatist groups from Myanmar, criminals, drug-traffickers and arms dealers operate in the area.
The BGB has informed Myanmar police of 49 Yaba factories near the border, said BGB official Anisur Rahman.
Both countries are committed to fighting drug traffickers and criminals in the border region, he said.
The Myanmar delegation informed the BGB that Rohingya-majority areas of their country had now returned to normal. The two countries have agreed to work together to decrease the number of Myanmar residents crossing the border into Bangladesh due to ‘unusual circumstances’.
“There is no long unrest in Maungdaw,” said Anisur Rahman. “We have agreed to work together to establish communications with the other party and prevent illegal border crossings if unusual circumstances, such as those of last year, crop up once again.”
The 16-member delegation from Bangladesh at the meeting was led by Brigadier General Rahman while a six-member Myanmar delegation was led by Myanmar’s Chief of Police General Staff Brigadier General Myo Swe Win.
