Migrants formed a human chain in front the Parliament Building in Athens, the capital city of the European country Greece with appeal not to send back undocumented Bangladeshi expatriates to home.
Expressing solidarity with the demand, migrants from different countries participated in the human chain.
Pakistan community in Greece with other local political and social organizations expressed their solidarity with the human chain.
Expatriates rights forum Greece Chapter organized the programme as because the government of the country started sending back undocumented Bangladeshi migrants.
The Greek government has sent back 19 undocumented Bangladeshi workers recently.
Leaders of the migrants’ forum protested the measures of the government and asked them to stop it immediately.
They also placed various demands for favouring the undocumented migrants saying that they were working hard for keeping the economy of the country on run even during the ongoing pandemic.
Leaders and activists in the human chain urged the government to stop oppression of the migrants on the borders. Bangladesh and Greece signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this month for hiring Bangladeshi workers in Greece.
It is the first MoU with any European country for sending Bangladeshi workers there.
As per the MoU, the Greece government has assured Bangladesh of providing job facilities to 4,000 new workers each year.
It also said that undocumented Bangladeshi workers working in Greece would be regularized by phases.
Meanwhile, the arrest spree in the Mediterranean country created panicked among the migrants.
When contacted, Imran Ahmed, Expatriates’ Welfare and Employment Overseas Minister told the New Nation that he would contact with Greek officials so that they stop the measures immediately.
